Commonwealth Games 2014 in Glasgow, Scotland

Commonwealth GamesWith over 80 years of participating in the history of sport, the Commonwealth Games are the international multi-sport event which is held every four years in various countries of the Commonwealth of Nations. This year’s games will be held for 11 days from 23 July to 3 August. Hosted by Glasgow, Scotland, the event promises to be the largest multi-sport event ever held in Scotland.

Commonwealth Games Events

Over 4,000 athletes will compete at this year’s games in 17 sports which will bring life to the 261 medal events played out at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Women’s boxing and a triathlon mixed relay event will also be new to the games this year. A new para-sport event to the games this year will be para-track cycling, and 21 other para-sport events will also be held, including swimming, lawn bowls, and weightlifting. Guests will have the opportunity to cheer on their favorite athletes while witnessing history being made.

Venues and the Village

On the east end of Glasgow, the main stadium used for the games has been transformed from a Scottish football stadium into a world-class athletic arena. Other venues are included in three clusters including the swimming pools, shooting center, hockey center, bike trails, and more.  In addition, the Athletes’ Village which will house the participants and other officials has been revealed as an innovative carbon-neutral housing development which will ultimately benefit the city dwellers of Glasgow as Scotland’s first large-scale project of this kind. The village development also includes housing, dining, medical care, and retail shops.
